Going Greek IV: The 4 B’s

Filed under: chi o, frosh disorientation, going greek, panhell, rush, sororities

Before rush begins, each girl is warned about the topics that are “off limits” during recruitment for a number of reasons. These forbidden topics, known as the “4 B’s” by PanHel are: the Bible, Bush, boys, and booze. So, why lay off these topics? Let me explain…

The Bible
Some sororities are much more religious than others. I don’t mean this in a “DG is the jewish sorority” type of way. I mean this in the fact that Chi O and other sororities have a high percentage of members who take part in Campus Crusade for Christ and other organizations. Each sorority has girls in a range of religions, however, some are much more serious about worship than others. DG and Kappa may have a lot of Jewish members, but they tend to be culturally Jewish, rather than practicing Jews (there’s a big difference). So, when going through rush, it’s probably best to leave God out of the picture and keep quiet about religion. Without religion present, the sorority quads are already enough at war during Rush Week…

Bush
Conservative or liberal? Don’t talk about it during rush. While NU is a relatively apathetic campus, some people are crazy about their politics. Especially if you are a Republican, I would stay quiet during rush…Bush hating is at an all time high, and you will immediately be labeled a “crazy Bush lover” if you come out swinging for W during rush. By the time January comes around, the election will be long over, but whether Barack or John comes out on top, it’s still best to keep quiet about it.

Boys
“Oh my god, I hooked up with so many guys last fall!” Wrong thing to say. Being a party girl who likes to go out is very different than being labeled a slut during Rush…and walking that line is a delicate balance. Also, be extremely cautious of what guys you talk about. If you are in Theta and begin talking about how you had sex with some girl’s boyfriend in Sig Ep…well, there is a good likelihood that the girl you’re talking about may be in front of you.

Booze
Most houses want to recruit girls that go out and portray a good image for their house. This includes girls who like to party, but know how to handle their alcohol. Girls will quickly cut girls who brag about vomiting, passing out, or have embarassing stories…wait til after rush to do those things. Also, some houses, like Chi O and DZ look down on girls that go out a lot. So, if you want those houses, make sure you don’t talk about going to class still buzzed from last night.

This year, PanHel will probably try to introduce a “5th B…Blogs.” PanHel hates RR and other sites that talk about Greek life, so it’s a good possibility they’ll try to keep girls quiet about them. We’ll see what happens…

Your Guide to: Northwestern’s Media

Medill’s a good school…bla bla bla. At NU, students consume their campus news in a variety ways. Here’s your quick guide to the confusing world of NU’s media.

The Daily Northwestern
The Daily is NU’s most widespread and popular news source. You can read it online at http://www.dailynorthwestern.com/ or pick it up at newstands all over campus (for free). In general, the Daily tries to present a fairly broad look at campus, covering sports, campus events, Evanston news, and other happenings. The best sections, by far, are the Police Blotter and the Forum. Inside the Police Blotter, you can read about who got arrested, what crimes were attempted, and what weird shit the freaks in Evanston tried to pull. In the Forum, you often get lucky when psychotic students get overly passionate about a topic and try to write letters to the editor or complain about some meaningless story. Each Thursday, the Daily publishes “The Weekly,” which is an attempt to write about gossip and scandal, but it fails pretty badly each week. The Daily is fairly harmless since it’s been declining in prominence on campus and doesn’t hold a monopoly over news anymore because of…

North By Northwestern
NBN is an online only newssource (although they published one magazine late Spring last year). It’s fairly random in what it covers, but because of its online capabilities, it’s faster in reporting news than the Daily and covers more offbeat things. NBN regularly publishes great reports about Freshman Housing, DM, and other big stories like that. While it isn’t as read as the Daily, it has a much more loyal fanbase who love it. Check it out at http://www.northbynorthwestern.com/.

The Northwestern Chronicle
The Chron is campus’ conservative paper. I actually don’t even know if it gets published anymore.

Northwestern OTR
Nothwestern OTR is an online gossip/news blog that tries to report stories about NU. However, its writers have seemed to be uninterested in the past, and the site has a tendency to choose people outside of the NU mainstream, resulting in weird and pointless stories. It’s become increasingly irrelevant as time has gone on, and will be interesting if its still read/updated in the coming school year.
