From the Wires: Credible or Crap?

An upperclasman gives freshmen this advice:

“You’ll figure out the party scene right away- like when you hear “ridge and noyes” you’ll instantly think of a frat’s off campus house. once you figure out which frat is where and who’s known for what, you’l be able to avoid the losers and focus on the cool frats. it’s ok to go to any party you hear about in the beginning, but after october, you’ll be only goign back to maybe 5 or 6 frats and won’t ever hear about the others.”

Credible or crap?

Greek Girls: Zeta

Known for: newest girls on the block, “alternative experience,” zexy/zugly

Celeb most likely to rush: Brooke Hogan. Why? Check out RR’s Celebrity Rush.

Pros: Zeta is the newest sorority on campus, having just refounded in 2007. Their first “true” rush class (i.e. recruited during Rush Week) was this past year’s 2008 PC. In their first year on campus, they have made huge leaps and strides and don’t look to be a repeat of the disaster that was ADPi. Already, Zeta has made it out of the bottom tier, and is solidly in middle ground. They have a lot of girls who got cut from houses their first year or didn’t rush, but are good enough not to be in the bottom. Also, the weakest girls from their first year on campus have just graduated, leaving more normal people to take over the house. In terms of philanthropy, they are extremely dedicated to their Breast Cancer awareness, and make one of the most sincere efforts of any house on campus in community service. Also, since Zeta is new on campus, they don’t yet have a stereotype, so they can easily recruit the “I don’t know about going Greek” girls.

Cons: Being new also has big downsides. Zeta has no history to go off of- so figuring out rush, homecoming, and other traditional events is new for them and may not go off as well as houses who have it down to a routine. Also, in their first year, Zeta avoided being cast off into social purgatory, but it still hasn’t established itself as a dominant house on campus. Their attempt to coin the phrase “Zexy” to refer to themselves backfired, with people on campus referring to some of their members as “Zugly,” which was a bit of an embarrassment as well. In terms of building relationships with guys, they seem to have taken 2 steps forward and 1 step back each time…and haven’t yet found their footing in the Greek world. Also, being so new, all it takes is one bad year of Rush and they can be cast down into the lower tier easily. Without a strong first impression, they’re at risk of making a bad second one.

Zeta is the perfect house for girls who don’t know if they are totally into the Greek thing. While they escape the negatives of being in the bottom tier, they also don’t have the pressure of being under social scrutiny constantly (which comes with the top tier). While some Zetas are funloving, others are serious tools. Hopefully, as they get more established, they’ll figure out rush better and weed out the bad seeds. They’re on the right path, but it seems like they have a long way to go.

Going Greek V: The Vocab

The Greek world is dominated by acronyms, strange terms, and vocabulary that’s used in atypical ways. Here’s a brief guide to some of the most thrown around words and phrases…

Bid: An offer to join a fraternity or sorority

“Dropping a bid”: the act of accepting a bid to a Greek house (no physical dropping involved)

“Rush Chair”: the individual in charge of coordinating the efforts known as rush…plans events, keeps tabs on potential new members (PNMs)

“Rush”: formally known as recruitment; the process through which potential members are filtered by a greek house into their final resting place

Quota: the number of members necessary to meet a pledge class’ requirement…established by PanHel

“Phil Round”: Philanthropy round; the first round of female Rush; takes place in November; sororities perform informal skits for girls; PanHel pretends this round of rush “doesn’t matter”

“‘Nuff Said”: Back of TNT rush shirts from several years back, still thrown around campus

“Baby Cards”: small cards used to remember the names of girls wanted by TNT; “Shay drives down Green Bay”

Hotboxing: the act of placing multiple older girls on a freshman during rush; indicates when a girl is wanted by a sorority

Negging: the act of rejecting a PNM from a greek house; frats do this during Rush Week by telling the freshman to look at other frats that may “better suit his interests”

“Red Hot”: term used by KKG to indicate a freshman is one of their 100 most wanted girls

“Star Gazer”: term used by DDD to indicate girls they are interested in

Pledge Mom/Dad: older member of a fraternity/sorority who mentors a freshman; gives gifts during Pledge Mom week

Skit: performances put on by sororities during rush to show off houses’ talents; PanHel limits these to give the bad houses fair ground

Rho Chi: recruitment counselor who leads freshman girls around during Rush Week

“getting cut”: not being asked back from a sorority

12…8…5…3…1: order in which sororities are narrowed down; changes yearly depending on PanHel regulations

Gifts: anything taken from inside a sorority; can be as tiny as a napkin or mint

“dirty rush”: the act of talking to or influencing freshman girls to like a sorority before Rush formally begins

Freshman Freeze: the first 4 weeks of Fall Quarter, in which freshmen can not step foot into fraternities

Date Party: event hosted at a bar in which each member of a frat/sorority can invite a date; normally very drunken affairs; mode of transport: buses or limos

Master these terms early and you’ll be a step ahead of your competition…I mean…your peers.
